Hockey Friars reach NCAA Tournament

Monday, March 24, 2014

Score a double-double for Providence College as far as the 2014 NCAA's are concerned.

The Providence Friar hockey team, ranked in the national Top 10 for much of the regular season, is following the men's basketball team into the NCAA Tournament.  Coach Nate Leaman's Friars (21-10-6) are seeded third in the East Regional, and will face 2nd seeded Quinnipiac (24-9-6) Friday night in Bridgeport, CT in the regional semifinals.  Face off will be at 5:30 pm, and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

Union College is the top seed in the East, and will take on 4th seeded Vermont in the other regional semifinal at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.  Union-Vermont will start at 2:00 pm and precede the Friars' game with Quinnipiac.  The two winners will meet Saturday afternoon, March 29th, at 3:00 pm for the right to move onto college hockey's Frozen Four.

Automatic qualification privileges are granted to the postseason champions of the five conferences.  UMass Lowell, which defeated PC 3-1 in the Hockey East semifinals, won the league title and will play in the Northeast Regional in Worcester, MA (DCU Center) as the #2 seed.  Five Hockey East teams earned bids into the 16-team event overall.  The remainder of the field is selected at-large.

Minnesota was the No. 1 overall seed. The other No. 1 seeds, in order, included Boston College, Union and Wisconsin.  The NCAA Frozen Four will be held April 10th and 12th at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.
